The Dales Way
(Ilkley to Bowness)

We travelled up on Friday 23 May to Appletreewick to set up camp.
On the Saturday, we travelled into Ilkley, did some shopping for the BBQ in the evening as the weather was beautiful.
The walk begins by the river and heads out across fields heading to Bolton Abbey which was where we stopped for lunch. We were soon into lifting the buggy over kissing gates but the going was mainly good and flat following the river most of the time.
Bolton Abbey was reached without incident and we relaxed by the river before setting off again with some of the more intrepid members tackling the stepping stones!
We then pushed onto Appletreewick, had a deserved BBQ before adjourning to the local hostelries for a nightcap before a nights sleep.

The next glorious day was to Kettlewell, mainly along the river to start and then up and over limestone country to Coniston Point before descending into Kettlewell and the Youth Hostel where we enjoyed a spaghetti bolognaise cooked by Lawrence and Dick.
Once again, the evening was rounded off with a trip to the local.

Day 3, still enjoying good weather, we left Kettlewell to reach Oughtershaw with a brief stop for lunch at a convenient pub, again mainly along the river but with a sharp ascent at the end to meet up with the bus. We then went into Hawes and the Wenslydale cheese factory where we stocked up on all varieties, brought some salad and bread to go with it and then made the journey into Dent and the camp site where the tents were put up in gusty conditions. Covent Garden soup, bread and Wenslydale were eaten for dinner before retiring to the local pub and a drink before bedtime.
The following day saw a change in the weather with the walkers being dropped off at Oughtershaw and heading over the high moors, joining the Pennine Way for a short distance taking lunch in the shelter of a dry stone wall against the high wind and low cloud. We then pushed over the top, under the railway viaduct and the long walk back into Dent, albeit on the flat. With the weather still bad, we adjourned to the pub for spicy lamb stew and a few beers(ginger, that is).

The next morning was still gloomy but the wind had abated and the tents were put down before the walk into Sedbergh where we met up with the bus and yet another lunch at a nice pub.
With the weather breaking again, we purchased fresh trout and burgers for those who dont like fish and continued to Grayrigg where we were again picked up by the bus and taken to the campsite at Kendal. An enjoyable BBQ was had by all before the heavy drinkers walked into Kendal for liquid refreshment.
The next day, with the weather improving, we travelled by bus back to Grayrigg, disembarked and walked over some pleasant countryside with views of the Lake District now on the horizon. Lunch in blazing sunshine next to a stream idyllic! Onward to Burneside, with our only puncture on the buggy to be repaired enroute. Back to the Kendal camp site and to the local for dinner in the evening. Chicken, stuffed with haggis, wrapped in pancetta ham followed by sticky toffee pudding.

The following day, the route was picked up from Burneside and with a luncheon stop in Staveley at an excellent pub, we carried on over a couple of steep climbs before stumbling on a tea room at a farm! Suitably refreshed we carried on and up to reach School Knot and a superb view of Lake Windermere and the mountains of the Lakes.
From here, downhill and the end of the Dales Way at Bowness
